It begins with a feeling, a sensation.
It develops into a thought, an idea.
It grows into a desire, maybe even a decision.
Being a surrogate is something that grows on you, much the way the child will grow in you a few months from now. But there is work to do between the decision and the implementation. Here are a few effective strategies on how to be a surrogate, so as to get the maximum benefit.
Get your financial ducks in order. At first, this might seem counter-intuitive. After all, what does pregnancy have to do with finances? And aren’t you going to be paid for being a surrogate mother?
Yes, you will be paid. But that is to cover your living expenses during the surrogacy. You still have your overall financial situation to keep in mind. And that is the issue. You’ll want to be able to focus on the pregnancy, not on finances. In fact, if you are on any form of government assistance, you are not allowed to be a surrogate in Florida.
The last thing you want on your mind is finances. Get them in order so that you don’t have to keep them in mind.
Get your household in order. You’ll be carrying the child in your uterus. But this is a family project. You can’t do something this big and this important in isolation. Everybody in your household will be a part of it, whether willingly or unwillingly.
Make sure it’s willingly.
Your partner might not be as eager as you. Help him to understand how important this is for your self-fulfillment. Tell him how much it means to you. Although surrogacy is neither an income-generating project nor a health plan, he should be aware of both the financial and health benefits involved.
Your child or children need to be involved. This is a project! We’ll be making a baby for a couple who want to become a mommy and a daddy. Make a list of things the kids can do to help make the pregnancy even better. They have an important role to play.
Any in-laws or relatives living with you, in your house, or who are frequent visitors, need to be supportive. If some are reticent, remind them of all the time you’ve been supportive of their projects. Let them know how much this means to you – don’t be shy on this point. Be explicit and ask for their support “Because I really need you to be on my side.”
One more thing – as a surrogate, you’ll spend a lot of time with a variety of professionals and with the intended parents. Make sure to spend every moment you can with your partner and children. Don’t let them feel like they’ve been put aside during this period.
A surrogacy free from financial and family worries is a happy surrogacy. Free from these external stresses, you can focus your attention on enjoying the experience and growing the baby.
It’s a work of art. It’s the start of life. It’s a thing of beauty. And these effective strategies on how to be a surrogate are key to making the most of it.Return to Blog
