Can you be a surrogate at any age?

Preparing to Become a Surrogate Mother - Surrogacy and Egg Donor Services

Some of the common questions we here from those interested in becoming a surrogate mother are “can you be a surrogate at any age” or “what are the age requirements for surrogate mothers?” Although technically there is a wide age range for those who can become pregnant, as a surrogate mother there are specific requirements, including age, that need to be met in order to begin your surrogacy journey.

What are the age requirements for surrogate mothers?

At many surrogacy agencies, including Creative Love Surrogacy Agency, the age requirements for surrogate mothers is between 21 and 38 years old. The reason agencies require surrogate mothers to be within this age range is to ensure the chance of a successful, healthy pregnancy are as high as possible.

What if I can still get pregnant after 38 years old?

Although the surrogate mother age requirements are between 21 and 38 years old, many women can still get pregnant and have successful pregnancies well into their 40s and sometimes even into their 50s. The reason these requirements are in place for surrogate mothers though, just like why there are other requirements, is to maximize the chance of a successful pregnancy.

As women get older, especially beyond 38 years old, the risks of complications during pregnancy, including miscarriages, increase. This is why there are restrictions on age when it comes to surrogacy.

Other requirements for surrogate mothers

Aside from meeting the age requirements, there are other requirements needed in order to become a surrogate mother. These requirements include prior pregnancies (it is required to have had at least 1 uncomplicated full-term pregnancy), residing in a surrogate-friendly state, being of good physical and mental health, being financially sound, having proper medical records and being able to pass a background check.
